AbioCor Artificial Heart
A Louisville Healthcare Fellow held one of AbioCor’s replacement hearts during a session led by Dr. Laman Gray, Jewish Hospital Chair in Cardiovascular Surgery. A product of three decades of research and development, AbioCor is the world’s first completely self-contained replacement heart. Jewish Hospital was one of only four centers involved in the clinical trial of the device. Dr. Laman Gray is an internationally-recognized leader in the field of cardiac surgery and development of artificial hearts and circulatory support systems. Dr. Gray performed Kentucky’s first heart transplant in 1984 and the first bridge to heart transplant in 1985. He also performed the first clinical use of ABIOMED’s SupraCor IABP and was one of the four primary clinical investors that brought ABIOMED’s BVS 5000 to clinical approval by the FDA.
